I’d wager it’s pretty clear that belief, creativity, and imagination evolved in primates long before religions ever came on the scene. If that’s indeed the case, it would seem to be significant when it comes to interpreting the early Genesis stories. That is, evolution has to be considered and when it is new possibilities open up for understanding the texts. One option for a more faithful account might be that these chapters are not to be understood as creation stories per se, as if the writers had Divine information about beginnings, but they can be interpreted as a founding narrative for the nation of Israel and its God.
