Jesus’ parables aim to subvert and shatter, yet
they also reconstruct in the wake of the debris. The attacking, overturning,
and revealing character of parables is not to be missed. Parables also
disorient, shock, and surprise, while announcing reversal and re-orientation in
the disclosure of new understandings about Jesus, the world, and the Kingdom of
God. These powerful stories are loaded with meaning that dangerously engages
imagination and, when that happens, watch out.
