Appeals to the biblical text as God’s communicative
action (what God has authored) and to the Spirit speaking in the text do not
help when it comes to dealing with the thorny issue of biblical authority. This
typical Reformation view simply assumes what it states – the biblical text is
authoritative because in certain places it says it is. We’re going to have to
do better. When you consider that the Bible has many genres and ways of
formulating words and actions, I’d wager that notions of authority need to be
revisited.
