Telling a good story may carry more weight for some
biblical writers than truth in any precise modernist sense. These authors wrote,
and this is how they should be read, from an ancient Near Eastern and
Greco-Roman perspective. Their notions of how to “recount” truth have little
correspondence to Enlightenment standards, which are clearly dubious.
