In
our book, From Evolution to Eden. Making Sense of Early Genesis, we refer to
Genesis 1-3 as having the prominent features of a poetic historiography. That
is, this is not a literal account of origins giving a list of historically
verifiable facts, but it actually interprets and redescribes the world in an
unfolding drama of beginnings and functions as a founding narrative for Israel
and its God.
