Christians
want to either integrate science and theology, so there’s peace, or they want
to keep them entirely separate, so there’s warfare. I hear all the time that
science and theology are compatible or that they are not. I’d wager neither of
these is a helpful formulation and both lead us down the wrong path. Rather, I
would suggest that we need to embrace a dialogical interaction with these two
informers in order to discover where there might be relations and distinctions
between them, and then go in whatever direction this takes us. This may mean
letting go of some old interpretations that are no longer credible, and
adopting new ones that are more fitting for today’s world.
