Assumptions that God is
personally involved with our economic, social, political, and even love life
are facing credibility checks. I’d wager that this picture of God may not fit
too well with the way the natural world actually seems to work. Yet many
believers, even in light of the latter, find the former is hard to envision
differently. Evangelicals and fundamentalists, in particular, are so used to
trying to “see” God as their own maître D’ that an exploration of a more
realistic portrayal of Divine action will not be welcome. Illusions about daily
life, for them, are much easier to hold on to than actualities.
