Reflection for the Week - June 29

Real relationships offer us dynamic possibilities to take part in a productive spiral towards mutuality—the narrative drama of a shared space to be and be with the other. Being enmeshed in the beauty of mutuality does not undermine individual freedom, but enhances it. For where responsible trust increases and unreliable suspicion diminishes, within the theater of a redemptive life, we discover that a poetics of loving and being loved is a marvel. Sameness and separation, which both happen in a perpetual moment of embrace and release are located in, yet transcend words and actions, as we draw ever closer to who we were meant to be.

Friday Musings – June 26
Today, what matters in many a classroom is not a well thought out argument, but how the view affects one’s personal emotional state. If someone says “that hurts my feelings,” even when it may be a valid position, this tends to be a weightier reason for rejecting it than offering a credible riposte on the level of ideas. As such “feelings” increasingly become the criteria for a better or worse view; this will create serious conflict, and even sometimes jeopardize job security for teachers.

Thursday Thoughts – June 25
Life & Death are inextricably woven together, until Death is no longer a necessary feature of Life.

Living Spiritual Rhythms – June 24

When we start to ask questions about Divine action, it may challenge our faith in the God we think we know. Some believers will not want to go here. But, I’d wager it is worth asking just what view of the natural world and God we have when we assume that God is clearing traffic jams to ensure we’ll make a flight for vacation. The old picture that God somehow reaches in from the outside to keep everything going or to act in particular ways should be carefully re-examined. Yes, I know. Exploring these types of issues will be difficult, yet in light of what we now are beginning to discover about how the world works, simplistic scenarios of Divine action are no longer viable, but have to be challenged. And then? Well, we’ll have to see where this takes us when it comes to knowing God.

Evolution & Eden ?
For a few cents more than a glass of wine in a café or restaurant in la Suisse, where I live, you can buy a copy of our new book From Evolution to Eden. Making Sense of Genesis 1-3. I guarantee that the effect of reading the book would outlast drinking the wine. I don’t, however, guarantee that the book would taste as good as the wine, but it might. At any rate, here’s a proposal. Take a risk if you fancy it – indulge in both: have a glass of Swiss wine and read this challenging book. Cheers, happy days, santé!

Reflection for the Week - June 22
Finding shelter in our world from the vacuous and inconsequential is harder and harder to do; the rhythm of trite leaves us exposed to a devaluing of heart, mind, and imagination. Rapid-fire bs captures the air waves and infiltrates our capacity to think clear and true thoughts that can be lived, in contrast to the prevailing and woeful meltdown of the critical adventure. While it’s true that criticism is never to be an end in and of itself, it is an essential component to chasten naïveté and to promote the virtuous life of following in the footsteps of Christ. Engage, critique, embrace―the Infinite One, other, and world; the given of giveness and the power of this trinity that offers us the spooky haven of relationality; the space to dwell in oneself as another.

Science & Theology
The old adage that scientists are uninvolved observers and that science is solely about the facts has been undergoing serious reassessment, and rightly so, since at least the days of Polanyi and Kuhn. An equally significant and judicious challenge is taking place with respect to biblical readers who have also embraced their own myths of impartiality in assuming that they read the Bible as solely a book of facts with no need of interpretation. If you’re interested in this topic as it relates to Genesis 1-3, there’s more in our new book From Evolution to Eden.

Friday Musings - June 5
The longer theology turns a deaf ear to science the more the lack of credibility for doing so will proliferate.

Thursday Thoughts – June 4
God is not pleased with charlatans who are faking faith out of pretense or duty that has nothing to do with the heart. OT prophets railed at those who were supposedly spiritual and doing all the right things, but forgot to love God and each other. And, although it’s often ignored, Jesus was less than friendly with those who claimed to be God’s people, but were hypocrites, while going out of his way to be merciful to bleeding women, prostitutes, and beggars.
