In Switzerland, we are especially remembering February 7, as it is the date when women first voted in this country. Though it is regrettable that this only started in 1971, a mere forty years ago, it is still cause for celebration.

So why did it take so long?
Susan,
Thanks. Well, one reason is a terribly skewed view of women by the ruling male elite, which was woefully similar to that of some of the early church fathers.
So would you say Switzerland is generally very conservative in other areas too? And is there still a low opinion of women?
I don't mean to be nosy, I'm just very surprised.
Interesting that direct democracy was one of the decisive reasons why it took so long.
Susan,
It can be, but there's a tendency to find negotiated ways through problems.
The view of women has changed and thankfully much progress has been made.
Sisyphos,
Thanks. The advantages elsewhere and disadvantages in this case of dd are certainly there.
