The ZigZag Café

We will be convening here at the ZigZag café, Suisse, on Thursdays for conversation and dialogue. I invite you to stop by every Thursday for the question of the day. Your thoughts and participation are most welcome. Pull up a stool, avec un café, un thé, ou un chocolat chaud, et un croissant, and join in here on Thursday at the ZZ café.

For today:

With the dramatic rise of the explanatory power of science in our times, is there any place left for God?

Science is extraordinary, of that I have no doubt. But I am sure there will always be room or a God of some sort.

Joseph,
Thanks. The way science is developing, having room for a God of some sort, is an interesting possibility. I guess it's the some sort that now has to be carefully looked at again.

I have started the "Disciple Bible Study" and it was so interesting/serendipitous, that this would be your question yesterday, as the morning's readings were Job 38-39 and 40.15-41.34. The editorials our local paper printed were by Christopher Hitchens, author of "God Is Not Great," and the title of his editorial was "Pray for Me? Why?" and the second was by Francis Collins, director of NIH, titled "Why I pray for my friend Christopher Hitchens."

I am agnostic that my prayer changes "things" but I know it changes me.

Carter,
Thanks. We have had some lectures here about Hitchens and Collins.

must've been well past my time. I was at Huemoz September thru December 1974. my wife and I visited in June 99. I lived in Beau Site.

Carter,
If you were here in '99 we probably crossed paths.

Yes, the lectures have taken place over the last three years.

I recall the first time I encountered the concepts of particle physics and quarks. The idea of three particles being the base of each other particle was astounding. I had just left L'Abri and was struck by the idea of the trinity having eternally existed. Then I read Walker Percy's essay, "A Triadic Theory of Meaning" in "Message in the Bottle". Scientific development only increases my sense of awe and wonder.

Carter,
Yes, I like your last sentence. Science increasing a sense of awe and wonder may mean that God is alot bigger than we can fathom.
